Out and About – Tri-Cities – August 2016
Family Friendly Tri-Cities Events and Activities Worth Checking Out
Welcome to the end of summer! It is amazing to me that somehow it is August and school will be starting in just a few short weeks. No worries, dear readers, it’s not over yet. There is still plenty of family friendly summer fun happening all around the Tri-Cities (and slightly beyond)! Let’s send this season out by creating a few more lasting memories with these events and activities.
Every month as we make our calendar we search for the greatest Tri-Cities Events and collect them here for you and your family calendar. Our goal is to find plenty of family friendly and educational events that will get every family out and about enjoying what our community has to offer!
Please note: Some activities may be outside the Tri-Cities but all can be managed in a day trip. Let’s get out there and have some fun!
August 5th, 6th, and 7th
Celebrate the anniversary of the first man landing on the moon and Space Week at Hand’s On Museum with fun activities like taking a core sample of a candy bar and checking out their Impact Simulation Bin Challenge.
July 29th to August 7th
This annual event is going to require a drive out of the Tri-Cities but is bound to be worth the gas! There is so much going on that I encourage you to visit the site here to check it all out and get your tickets.
August 12th to 13th
This festival is new this year! It will be heavily focused on local arts, crafts, food, and music! Some of my very favorite things! Check out all the details here.

Saturday 10 – 5 and Sunday 9:30 to 4
Bring your family out to the Davy Crockett Birthplace State Park and witness live reenactments, tour the cabin, learn how to throw a tomahawk, shoot archery, weave with pine needles and much more. Fun and games for children will be available in abundance. Food trucks will be on site.

One of my all time favorite stories is The Giving Tree by Shel Silverstein. Visit Into the Fire in Johnson City for this kid friendly event. Please note reservations are required.

Nothing says summer quite like a night at the fair! Visit the Appalachian Fair Grounds for music, games, food, and fun will be waiting.
August 30th from 4-6
T and I have brought our finds out here to the Natural History Museum before and we learned a lot. It was fun and they even gave us cookies, so…
August 31st at 12:00 pm
This Johnson City Public Library program will introduce you to the genealogy research tools available through TEL and the Johnson City Public Library. It’s always fascinating to discover who came before us. With the tools introduced at this talk, you will learn how to dive deep into your family tree!
If you are looking to make a fun day trip we have made several. Check out our favorite:
Visit Sliding Rock in Brevard NC and enjoy a 60-foot natural water slide! We had so much fun here and Looking Glass Falls is just down the road! If you are looking for a truly memorable trip to cap off your summer, this could be it!
Also, if you are working on your homeschool planner I have a free printable with 39 Inspiring Quotes for Your Student. One for each week of the year. Get yours here.
