Family Friendly Tri-Cities Events and Activities Worth Checking Out

Every month as we make our calendar we search for the greatest Tri-Cities Events and collect them here for you and your family calendar. Our goal is to find plenty of family friendly and educational events that will get every family out and about enjoying what our community has to offer!

Please note: Some activities may be outside the Tri-Cities but all can be managed in a day trip. Let’s get out there and have some fun!

Friday and Saturday – June 3rd and 4th, 2016 – George L. Carter Train Show at ETSU

10 am to 5 pm

Over a year in the making, this show will take place at the mini-dome. An operational mini-steam engine will be there as well as 150 tables of all things train-related! There is an admission fee of $5.00 but parking is free for the event.

George L. Carter Railroad Museum

Devoted to the region’s historical ties to railroads, the museum is dedicated to the memory of George L. Carter who built the Clinchfield Railroad through 277 miles of mountainous terrain to carry coal from Eastern Kentucky to the Carolina Piedmont.

Saturday – June 4th, 2016 SodaFest Family Festival in Jonesborough

4 pm to 8 pm

Well, this is a new one!  And it sounds delicious! Have an opportunity to taste all types of soda pop, take part in a sock hop, play Bottle Cap Bingo, or relax and watch a family friendly movie. One ticket per taste and tickets are sold in 15 packs for $11.50. Learn more about it below.

Tennessee State Parks will be presenting ranger-led day hikes, night hikes, history hikes, nature hikes or trail clean-up hikes. We love to hike and our favorite trips have all been ranger-led. Join us on June 4 as we celebrate the American Hiking Society’s National Trails Day! Since 1993, the American Hiking Society has set aside the first Saturday in June as National Trails Day, bringing together outdoor enthusiasts to participate in educational exhibits, trail dedications, gear demonstrations, instructional workshops and trail projects.

Dragonfly Day!  This is going to be awesome. Hang out with a REALLY smart photographer and naturalist as well as an amazing Aquatic Biologist in dragonfly habitats! Learn outdoors! What more could you ask for out a Saturday?

“Under the Milky Way” is a great show that highlights our very own Milky Way galaxy. We look into the structure of our galaxy and how it was formed. We also look back, starting with an ancient Chinese star lore story, to our continuing understanding of what our galaxy is and how large it is.

Monday – June 27th, 2016 – Wolves Program at Bay’s Mountain

3 pm to 4 pm

We love to visit the wolves when we go to Bay’s Mountain. This program will teach why the gray wolves are important to our ecosystem and also give us a chance to know them a little better!
