Bay’s Mountain Lakeside Trail Review
Hiking Trails at Bay’s Mountain Are Among The Best Around
When you think of Bay’s Mountain you probably think of how amazing the Planetarium is. Maybe you think about how cute the otters are or how massive the wolves are in real life. Perhaps you think about Chia the Vulture who is ridiculously smart and has a great story. Or maybe you think about the ropes course or the beauty found on the barge rides.
All of these things and so much more make up Bay’s Mountain but I want to encourage you to think of the hiking trails the next time you think of Bay’s Mountain because they are amazing! In fact, the hiking trails at Bay’s Mountain were just rated in the Top Three Hiking Spots by Blue Ridge Country Magazine. I’m about to show you why!
Bay’s Mountain in Kingsport, Tennessee
Bays Mountain Park is a 3,550 acres nature park and planetarium located on Bays Mountain in Kingsport, Tennessee.
T and I work really hard at this homeschool thing all year long. During the long winters when other students get snow days we make a choice and most of the time we chose to go ahead and do our lessons anyway. Why?
We know all about the end of year burn out that inevitably arrives about the same time as Spring. T and I discovered long ago that storing up those snow days for bright sunshine filled Spring days is an exchange worth great reward. Hmm. Sitting at a desk in front of our books or sitting on a bridge, deep in the forest around Bay’s Mountain, contemplating nature in a hands-on way? It’s a simple choice.
We decided that we would we use one day a week to do some volunteer work and to enjoy nature for the last five weeks of school. Our first week we dedicated to Lakeside Trail at Bay’s Mountain. This is a gorgeous hike. It’s 2.3 miles which take you right around the lake.
This time of year we see a lot of life bursting from the earth and water. Spring is such a beautiful time at the lake.
Wildlife surrounds you on this hike. You are likely to see all kinds of birds like this red-bellied woodpecker! There are also turtles lounging on logs out in the water. And there are squirrels and chipmunks in abundance.
There are many opportunities to cross the water. Neat little footbridges meet you along the trail.
Our favorite of these lovely little paths is a bridge which is surrounded by clear water and white sand.
You could stay here all day with your bare feet in the crystal clear water below the quaint little bridge, but there is so much trail ahead.
It calls to you…
“The mountains are calling and I must go.” – John Muir
We recommend a visit to Bay’s Mountain. While Lakeside Trail is our favorite hike, there are plenty of other trails to explore. You can view their Trail Map here.
