Buffalo Mountain Hike Review
Climb a Mountain in Johnson City TN
May is our favorite month of homeschool. It is the end of our school year and the start of field trip month. We work extra hard and cover as much as possible during the cold days of winter so that when at last the sun decides to show we will be ready to get out and enjoy places like Buffalo Mountain Park. We generally have at least two adventures a week and every lunch break is taken outside. I love it. T loves it. Who wouldn’t love it?
Last year we hiked Roan Mountain and it was an amazing experience! Read about that here, Climbing Roan Mountain. Yesterday we decided to check out a mountain we have never visited before.
I had heard about Buffalo Mountain from friends but had never been. Located just five minutes from ETSU it seemed the perfect destination. We prefer guided hikes because you can learn so much but this was a last minute decision. The forecast had been calling for rain so when we saw the weather man had suddenly changed it to clear with a high of 83 we had to act fast.
Buffalo Mountain Park is 725 acres of well-marked trails. The climb to White Rock and the Tower is steep! Your legs will burn but in a good way. Lady slippers were abundant from White Rock up. The butterflies are lovely and everywhere. The birds too, call this mountain home and we wished we had remembered our binoculars.
The paths are clear and it would be hard, even for someone like me, to get lost up there. The lower trails are said to be easy enough even for small children. It was a wonderful hike. We hiked for about four hours and today, we feel the ache. We went on a Tuesday and only encountered two other hikers. The woods were quiet and peaceful with the sounds of birds chirping a relaxing backdrop.
Towards the bottom a creek runs, it gentle gurgle is soothing. Frogs and dragonflies occupy its banks. If you are looking for a great place to be enveloped by nature yet moments from the city, you will find it at Buffalo Mountain.
The address is 5070 Highridge Road, Johnson City, TN 37601. Parking is available and free. To learn more about the park click here. A tip, don’t forget your bug spray! Bring lots of water and be ready to climb!
Here are some pictures of H and T enjoying the view from White Rock.
And here is one of T and I enjoying our latest adventure. We are sweaty and hot but we feel great! We love the challenge of the climb and the reward of being in a place mostly untouched by human hands.
