Earth Day Crafts – Butterfly Art Garland
Earth Day Arts & Crafts Made From Magazine Pages
This year for Earth Day we are focusing on how we can reuse things. We have plans to paint an old tire we found out in the woods and reuse it as a tomato planter. Another plan includes turning eggshells into seedling planters when we separate those later this week. Plus, we are also repurposing tiles we discovered buried out by the fire pit by turning some into a mosaic walkway and others into art canvases. Because we are under a Safer At Home order Earth Day Arts and Crafts are best created from things we already have lying around.

My favorite Earth Day Art Project we have made so far is this adorable butterfly art garland we created from a stack of old magazines. I want to eventually make them in smaller sizes so I can have one hanging from the mirror in my car and I also think some tiny ones would make adorable magnets. For now, though, I have created this butterfly garland for our homeschool room which goes with our theme of conservation and ecology. They look right at home in there.

Instructional Butterfly Art Videos and Blog Posts

Originally I thought I would be able to sew the embroidery thread right through the butterflies, It turned out that was too tough for me to get a needle through. You can just tie the butterflies to a cord, thread or string but I found that when I tried that they turned in all different directions.
Displaying Your Earth Day Art
Our homeschool room is full of all things ecology and conservation including a beautiful poster of butterflies.
I decided to string these magazine page butterflies up in a garland for display in there but you can hang yours anywhere they make you happy. I think they would be adorable hanging in windows, under a mantle, or in a sunroom.
Creating a Butterfly Garland
I should note that before I strung them onto my twine, I used a needle and thread to give each butterfly a short hanger. You can see that stage above. I then strung these onto my twine and it was easy to move them around where I wanted them once I had them hung.
