Pack Wisely.

Make your packing list several days before the actual packing and keep it handy so you can add to it as you think of things. Things like chargers and pillows can be easy to forget.

Also, a Back Seat Organizer is a game-changer. Load it up with a water bottle, a Kindle or iPad, headphones, crayons and coloring books, storybooks, and handheld games. Don’t forget tissue and wet wipes too. I like to put some surprises in there like a new travel journal or a new book or toy that no one is expecting. Fun little surprises that they don’t see until they are on the road can make the adventure feel extra special.

Feed Them Well.

A cooler is essential. Load it with sandwiches and drinks so you don’t have to make unnecessary stops. Cheese sticks, fruits, and veggies are good snack choices you can bring along too. Avoid sugary snacks that will make it hard for them to sit still. Granola bars, sugar-free gummies, and popcorn are some of our favorite choices.

Storytime.

Physical books and audiobooks are a great way to pass the time. We usually make a trip to the library before we travel so everyone has several selections that they are interested in. We wait until we are on the road before we crack them open.

Also, don’t be afraid to up their screentime while on the road. Movies are a great way to pass the time. These are also available at most local libraries.

Comfort Counts.

Make sure you pack their favorite blankets and a travel pillow. If they have a favorite stuffed animal make sure to include it. Allow children to travel in comfortable clothes, even pajamas can be a great idea for really long road trips.

Are We There Yet?

Help your kids understand the distance you have traveled by printing a map and marking it with some landmarks they can be watching for. Whether it be the names of big cities or historical sites, highway signs can help them gauge their progress. Also, when planning bathroom breaks consider making some of them at parks instead of rest areas so they have a closer destination they can look forward to.

Build Excitement.

Help them learn all about their vacation destination. Research the state you’ll be visiting and learn its motto, state bird, popular attractions, and any foods or flavors they are famous for. Discuss which moments kids are most looking forward to once they reach their destination. And have everyone take turns writing in a Travel Journal so you can capture your journey in a personal and lasting way.
