Eleanor Roosevelt Quote

“No one can make you feel inferior without your consent.” Eleanor Roosevelt

For most of my life, I cared about what other people thought about me. I would never have admitted to such weakness then but all the same, it was a powerful force in my life. It hurt me when I found out someone didn’t like me or laughed behind my back at my big dreams, or picked on my sense of style. My feelings were easily hurt when I was younger. Fortunately, I have for the most part outgrown this unfortunate way of thinking. It may sound unkind but it remains the truth that I really don’t care what other people think about me anymore. Except the rare sacred few that make up my heart, my family. But even they don’t have the power to clip my wings that I once handed out to mere strangers.

I grew up and finally recognized that choosing to fly is a choice made solely by the one who wants to soar. No one can make me fly high and no one can slam me back to the earth except myself. My haters have since been rendered silent by this knowledge. The power was never theirs to own. I was just handing it over at every harsh word or ugly glare or uttered doubt. I’m so glad I finally saw the truth and took back the reins. In this discovery I also have found that surrounding myself by the people who will lift me up ever higher, who will believe right alongside me, who will cheer me on and encourage me every step of the way, these are the people worth hearing. These are my people. I love them. I adore them. I lift them up and cheer them on and love them unconditionally. Why I wasted my time on the other sort I will never really understand. Eleanor Roosevelt learned this lesson too. I love this quote.

Mark Twain Quote

“Twenty years from now you will be more disappointed by the things that you didn’t do than by the ones you did do. So throw off the bowlines. Sail away from the safe harbor. Catch the trade winds in your sails. Explore. Dream. Discover.” Mark Twain

I’ve recently discovered how quickly twenty years can fly by. This quote hits me extra hard for that reason. If I could travel back in time to my twenty-year-old self and truly absorb the meaning of these words, I know I would have lived a very different life. The good news? My forty-year-old-self has truly absorbed these words and they have made a powerful impact on me. So powerful that I have found myself swept off my feet, thrown from the mundane path I had somehow landed upon, and blissfully sailing into a future that is burning bright with possibility. I encourage you to do the same. Explore. Dream. Discover. These next twenty years are going to be a grand adventure.

Call It A Plan Quote

“Don’t call it a dream…call it a plan.”

I have learned a lot of amazing things about life from my husband. He’s not just brilliant but also wise. One of these little nuggets was learning to plan. We can dream ourselves through twenty years no problem. We can spend an entire life imagining our dreams, merely suspecting the possibilities of all that we could become. Or… we can make a plan, get moving, and triumphantly pull those dreams into reality. It takes work, focus, energy, and waking hope but it can be done. Not by dreaming of it, but by doing it. By living it. It’s time to make a plan, my friends. Now, is the time.

Live More Quote

“Life is getting up an hour early to live an hour more.”

I know what you are thinking, Geez, Gwen! Get up an hour earlier? No way! And I hear you sleepy head, but I have learned that living your best life takes time. When I chose BOLD as my word of the year so many things changed. But so many things stayed the same too. For example, the laundry didn’t start doing itself while I made time to blog. T still had to be educated and educated to the absolute best of my ability despite the fact that I now had homework assignments of my own. T still was too young to drive himself to his lessons and sports commitments but I also had classes to attend for myself. It didn’t seem possible at first. What I learned was that I had to make time. If I wanted to take the classes and commit to my blog, I had to get up early and stay up late. Now, I am a girl who appreciates her beauty sleep, but some things are worth the sacrifice. If you want to live your best life, I believe you have to be all in. Even if it means getting up with the sun.

Robert Frost Quote

“Two roads diverged in a wood and I – I took the one less traveled by.” -Robert Frost

I was doing the thing that we do. I was working the nine to five, trying to parent in the mornings and the evenings and spending all my daytime hours fighting to make sure the bills were paid and the food was being put on the table. I lived like that for a very long time. I missed so much of my sons’ early life. I thought that was how I had to live, to survive. It was miserable. Somewhere along the way, I had bought into the idea that real women sought the climb up the corporate ladder. I had become convinced that power and position were what defined us young adult women.

I bought into the idea that sacrificing all that time away from my son was in his best interests because I was providing for him. Providing him clothing and shelter yes but what about providing him a close and complete relationship with a mother who had the time to guide him and teach him and enjoy him? What about lunch in the park, and movie nights, and participating in the discovery of who this little man was, revealed moment by moment right here in reality between the hours of nine to five?

When did it become less than amazing to just be a stay at home Mom? I don’t know, but I believed it. For some Mom’s the corporate ladder may be their true calling and I am totally cool with that, but for me, success was found at last in being an amazing Mom. In all my life, all those years of school, then college, and then fourteen years of working hard at the office, I had never felt such peace and contentment until I finally let my career go and decided to take care of my home and my family full time.

I went home and suddenly it all felt right. I discovered this amazing truth, being a stay at home Mom is super cool too! I don’t know how such an important job has been diminished by society so drastically but it has and it makes me sad. I’ve lived both sides of the coin and home is where it is at for me. I have been a world-changing superstar from within these four modest walls. I have taught my son well and included life skills, faith, and character development in his studies. I have taken him to so many beautiful and wondrous places and shown him the world. I have been allowed the time to take him with me on countless volunteer opportunities where he has learned how to handle himself on a farm, in a garden, building the walls of a home, preparing food for the needy, packing boxes of meals for those in far away countries, bringing Christmas to the impoverished, and so much more. I have taught him to cook and clean and read and write and love his neighbor and know his world history. It has been and continues to be an amazing adventure. The best I have ever been on. And I was almost robbed of it. I wish the world would once again look at this lifestyle and cheer us on. But for now, I am traveling the road less traveled here and I am happy.

I not only chose to rebel against society’s notion of what a woman needs to do to achieve success in America today but to top it all off, I also chose to become a homeschool Mom. The ultimate in rebel. The road less traveled for sure. And then, to become a blogger? And I wouldn’t change a thing. Seriously, define your own path, walk your own truth, live your best life, guys! Twenty years goes way too fast!
