Newer research (like this) shows that people that read and flex their brain more are 2.5 times less likely to get Alzheimer’s. And you likely knew all that, but did you know that reading fiction also helps you relate to other people better. You become more empathetic. Helping you to more successfully navigate your relationships. (Click here for the Science on that one.) Still not ready to hop in your car and head for the bookstore? How about this one? Research shows reading can reduce stress by up to 68%! 68%!!!! Check out this research conducted in 2009 at the University of Sussex that showed that reading was the most effective way to overcome stress! The MOST effective way! Buy Some Houseplants And Make Your House A Positive Place

Basic Science has taught us all that plants reduce carbon dioxide levels, certain pollutants, and air born dust levels! Those are awesome reasons to fill your house with a bunch of houseplants! But did you know that houseplants can also do cool things like make you feel better? Yeah, hospital patients with plants in their rooms were more positive and had lower blood pressure and stress levels. Houseplants can also reduce mental fatigue!

Check out this collection of data on the Benefits of Houseplants from Bayer Advanced:

  • A study at The Royal College of Agriculture in Circencester, England, found that students demonstrate 70 percent greater attentiveness when they’re taught in rooms containing plants. In the same study, attendance was also higher for lectures given in classrooms with plants.
  • The Dutch Product Board for Horticulture commissioned a workplace study that discovered that adding plants to office settings decreases fatigue, colds, headaches, coughs, sore throats and flu-like symptoms. In another study by the Agricultural University of Norway, sickness rates fell by more than 60 percent in offices with plants.
  • Studies at the Agricultural University of Norway document that using plants in interior spaces decreases the incidence of dry skin, colds, sore throats and dry coughs.

Why you need houseplants

So how many houseplants do you need to improve your quality of life and air? And which ones are the best?

The NASA studies on indoor pollution done back in 1989 recommended 15 to 18 plants in 6 to 8-inch- diameter containers to clean the air in an average 1,800 square foot house. That’s roughly one plant per 100 square feet of floor space.

Sign Up To Volunteer – The Best Way To Improve Your Life Is To Help Improve Someone Else’s

Don’t skip over this one! Volunteering may seem like a thankless way to spend your time. No paycheck. No monetary reward in exchange for your time. But I am here to tell you that there is nothing you can do that will improve the quality of your own life more than improving the quality of someone else’s life. And you are needed. The world has moved away from the idea that we are here to take care of one another but that doesn’t change the truth. The truth is that we are meant to love and care for one another and there is true peace and contentment when we take the time to reach out and love our purpose.

According to createthegood.org volunteering can:

  • Decrease your risk of depression.
  • Increase your self-confidence
  • Reduce stress levels.
  • Experience “The Happiness Effect.” You know that feel-good sense you get after a vigorous workout? It comes from a release of dopamine in the brain. Helping others has that exact same effect—so the more you volunteer, the happier you become!

The opportunities are endless! Even if you only sign up for thirty minutes once a week. Sign up. Reach out. Help where you can and I promise, you will be SO glad that you did.

Pray Every Day

Did you know that at least half of Americans pray every day? I am one of them. Ours is a whole family that prays. We pray together and we pray individually. The benefits far exceed just those we experience physically. For the purposes of this post, we will go ahead stick to the Science.

5 Health Benefits of Prayer

Here are five scientifically-supported benefits of prayer from Psychology Today:

  • Prayer improves self-control
  • Prayer makes you nicer
  • Prayer makes you more forgiving
  • Prayer increases trust
  • Prayer offsets the negative health effects of stress

Prayer can also help you help others. Check this out from the article – Why praying is good medicine:

  • Research has shown that heart disease patients are “significantly helped” when prayers are said on their behalf. Prayers may also help those with fertility problems to conceive.
  • Subjects who are unaware they are being prayed for can be significantly helped.
