Ink and Bone Book Review

A Haunting Suspense Story

This book, Ink and Bone, is the first spooky book selection that made the final cut for this series. At the time of this posting, I have read four books in my efforts to find several really awesome stories to share in time for Halloween. In my humble opinion, a truly great frightening read will keep you in suspense, will surprise you, will make you believe in the impossible, and will deliver an ending that also delivers a sense of relief. This book checks all the marks. I am not looking for gore. I am looking for a chill down the spine. And, Ink and Bone hits every mark!

Meet The Characters of Ink and Bone

Finley: A true wild child, trying to tame herself. Finley is a college student with a lot more on her mind then what her next Psychology class will focus on. Finley hears things and sees people no one else can. They all want something from her. So far, she has spent her life trying to avoid them but those days are about to end. The time has come for her to face her fears, one ghost at a time.

Eloise: Finley’s beloved grandmother has been grandly titled as one of the world’s most powerful psychics. Her help is often sought even by respected authorities. But she has lived a long life and it has been a hard one. And Eloise is getting tired.

Jones Cooper: A retired cop who is currently working as a Private Investigator. He has all of those years of police work under his belt and another major advantage too. He works with the town psychic. Eloise is one of his closest friends and his partner. He is an unlikely believer. But he has seen enough so that he knows he can believe.

Merri Gleason: A broken mother whose daughter has been kidnapped after a brutal attack on her family. She has tried everything to find her daughter, Abbey. Everything except consulting with a psychic. Until now.

What I Liked About Ink and Bone:

I really liked the setting of this book. It takes place in a town called The Hollows. The Hollows is cold. It has a lot of ancient trees, small-town camaraderie, dark history, and layers of secrets. In more than one way, there is a lot going on just below the surface in The Hollows. Finley with all of her wild ways, her tattooed exterior, her indecisive running from everything… She’s not your typical lead. I like that about her. The flow and pace of the story are right on. And the story itself is just so good. Ghosts, kidnappings, secrets, lies, psychics, dreamers…  What more could you want from a Halloween story?

From the Book Jacket of Ink and Bone:

The stunning bestseller voted a Best Book finalist in the Goodreads Choice Awards!

Twenty-year-old Finley Montgomery is rarely alone. Visited by people whom others can’t see and haunted by prophetic dreams she has never been able to control or understand, Finley is terrified by the things that happen to her. When Finley’s abilities start to become too strong for her to handle–and even the roar of her motorcycle or another dazzling tattoo can’t drown out the voices–she turns to the only person she knows who can help her: her grandmother Eloise Montgomery, a renowned psychic living in The Hollows, New York.

Merri Gleason is a woman at the end of her tether after a ten-month-long search for her missing daughter, Abbey. With almost every hope exhausted, she resorts to hiring Jones Cooper, a detective who sometimes works with psychic Eloise Montgomery. Merri’s not a believer, but she’s just desperate enough to go down that road, praying that she’s not too late. Time, she knows, is running out.

As a harsh white winter moves into The Hollows, Finley and Eloise are drawn into the investigation, which proves to have much more at stake than even the fate of a missing girl. As Finley digs deeper into the town and its endless layers, she is forced to examine the past, even as she tries to look into the future. Only one thing is clear: The Hollows gets what it wants, no matter what.

New York Times bestselling author Lisa Unger “builds a sense of place for The Hollows that rivals Stephen King’s Castle Rock for continuity and creepiness.” (The News & Observer – Raleigh)
