We also strive to be a source of information for excellent volunteer opportunities that you can take part in to improve our community and the lives and well being of our neighbors. Welcome!

Local Family Fun
Early 19th Century Quill Pens, Writing & Letter Posting at Sycamore Shoals Historic Site
Saturday – February 1st, 2020 (10:00 – 11:30 & 1:00 – 2:30)
Cost: $10.00 Max: 10 per session
Handwritten letters are almost a thing of the past. Join Museum Curator Chad Bogart and learn more about this nearly forgotten art form. See how to fashion feathers into writing instruments, learn about the different types of ink and paper used in early America, and discover how posting a letter in the early 19th century was much different than today. Register and pre-pay by calling the park at 423-543-5808.
*** Ages 15 and under must be accompanied by an adult as we will be using sharp tools. The accompanying adult is not required to pay the class fee. Not recommended for children under 10 years of age ***

All outdoor enthusiasts, from amateur to old hat, need to brush up on their survival skills now and then. This February, the Survival Series is back to give you a crash course in surviving and thriving in the wilderness!
This series is designed to teach you what you need to know to take care of yourself and others while spending time outdoors, whether here at Bays Mountain Park or any outdoor destination you find yourself exploring. We’ll help you feel safe and prepared every time you step outside.
Feb. 1: Trail Etiquette
Feb. 8: Lost in the Woods
Feb. 15: Winter Food Survival
Feb. 22: Hiking with a Dog
Feb. 29: Emergency Shelters
Park guests can purchase tickets for the Survival Series the day of the event at the Nature Center gift shop for $3 per person. Tickets for Park Association members are free (must show pass at the gift shop), and all participants should check-in at the gift shop.

Old Time Medical Herbs Program with Martha Whaley at Tipton-Haynes State Historic Site
Thursday – February 6th, 2020 from 6:30 pm to 9:30 pm
Once again Tipton-Haynes is pleased to have Martha Whaley present her program on Old Time Medical Herbs and medical treatment, many which are still being used today in modern medicines.
Pack That Backpack Event at Roan Mountain State Park
Friday – February 7th, 2020 from 7 pm to 9 pm
Join Ranger Holland for an evening beginners program on the basics items needed for backcountry backpacking. This program is for hikers new to backpacking and will be focused on what basic items should be included in your backpack and their uses. The program will be held in an indoor environment and last approximately one to one and a half hours. Participants can bring their own backpacking gear in addition to getting familiar with items brought for display.
This program is free but does require registration due to limited group size. Meet at the park headquarters prior to going to the program area.
Owl Prowl at Bay’s Mountain State Park
Friday – February 7th, 2020 from 6 pm to 8 pm
What lurks in the night at Bays Mountain Park? Join us for the Owl Prowl, where we’ll track down an elusive nocturnal predator that calls Bays Mountain home: the owl!
You’ll have the chance to explore the forest at night while listening to park rangers try to call in wild owls. This program will require hiking, so please dress appropriately for the weather and activity. No flashlights allowed.
Please meet in front of the Nature Center before the program begins at 6 p.m. There’s no need to preregister and no charge for this program, but park entry fees will apply.
Teen Writing Club at The Johnson City Public Library
Fridays – February 7th, 14th, 21st, and 28th, 2020 at 3:30 pm
Visit the teen area on Fridays from 3:30-4:30 to work on your creative writing and receive tips and inspiration from staff or other teen writers. Writing club participants will also receive information on how to submit their work to JCPL’s new teen literary digest. *This program is intended for ages 12-18.
2020 Chocolate Fest in Jonesborough
Saturday – February 8th from 11 am to 3 pm
Who needs love when you can fall into chocolate?!
Spend this Valentine’s weekend at Jonesborough Area Merchants and ServiceAssociations’ Chocolate Fest throughout downtown. Come taste some delicious chocolate treats provided by area merchants and restaurants. There will be endless options— everything from barks, fudges, chocolate-covered strawberries and so much more! 2020 Winter Naturalist Rally at Roan Mountain
Saturday – February 8th, 2020
Join the Friends of Roan Mountain for their annual Winter Naturalist Rally on Saturday, February 8th at Roan Mountain State Park. Celebrate the beauty of nature in winter while learning about the unique natural features that make this mountain such a unique place.
A schedule of events will include guided nature hikes, guest speakers, wildlife viewing experiences and more!
My Little Valentine Daddy Daughter Dance at Memorial Park Community Center
Saturday – February 8th, 2020 from 6 pm to 8 pm
Memorial Park Community, 510 Bert St., will host the seventh annual My Little Valentine Daddy Daughter Dance on February 8th from 6-8 pm. Get all dressed up and dance the night away with the ones you love! This event is open to fathers/grandfathers/guardians and daughters of all ages. DJ music will fill the air inviting all to hit the dance floor.
There is no specific dress code for the dance. Please make sure that you buy both the father and the daughter a separate ticket. $20 per person – buy tickets here. Everyone is required to have their own ticket. Children under the age of three are not required to have a ticket. (Tickets will not be available at the door) Once you complete registration your ticket will be available for pick-up at Memorial Park Community Center anytime. Be Electric AND National Inventor’s Day at Hand’s On Discovery Center
Tuesday – February 11th, 2020
One day only, Tesla Experience tickets are $1 for everyone (with paid general admission-excludes groups) or $3 for the Tesla Experience show only (no admission to exhibit or program spaces), with shows at 10:30, 12:30, 2:30, and 4:30. As always, children under 3 are free. Additional activities will be announced throughout the day and are free with admission while supplies last.
Stop by our Discovery Carts to learn about coding and robotics with our Cubelets Modular Robotics sets. Then visit our Make It. Take It. exhibit space to tinker and craft with a variety of supplies and try out some of our maker challenges. FREE with general paid admission.
Colonial Valentine’s Day Gifts at Sycamore Shoals Historic Site
Friday – February 14th, 2020 from 1 pm to 2:30 pm
St. Valentine’s Day in Colonial America wasn’t filled with boxed chocolates and long stem roses. Join Museum Curatorial Assistant Chad Bogart to take a closer look at some unique 18th century Valentine’s Day traditions and superstitions. Also, learn how to make three different colonial-era valentine gifts for your sweetheart; a puzzle purse, a heart-in-hand, and a basket weave heart.
Children must be accompanied by an adult. $6 each.
Friday – February 14th, 2020 from 3:30 pm to 5:30 pm
Celebrate love by bringing your loved ones for a fun hike to warm yourselves up in the chilly weather! Meet Dani at the Nature Center for this hike, with some hot chocolate to be provided afterward.
Maple Syrup Festival & Pancake Breakfast at Tipton-Haynes
Saturday – February 15th, 2020
Watch as the gathered sap from our maple trees is boiled down to sweet maple syrup. Pancake breakfast 8:00 through 11:00. Maple sap will be cooked down all day, so come on out and join us at any time! Breakfast is $2.00 extra. For more information then please call the site at 423-926-3631.
Battery Power Drop Off Project at Hand’s On Discovery Museum
Tuesday – February 18th, 2020
Join us on Alessandro Volta’s birthday to explore circuitry, make an LED creation using diodes and button batteries, investigate with an electromagnetic battery train, and make a homemade battery with a variety of materials.
Early registration by Tuesday, February 4th is $15 for HODC members and $20 for non-members.
Late registration is $20 for HODC members and $25 for non-members.

Blind Date With A Book at Johnson City Public Library
Tuesday – February 18th, 2020 from 6 pm to 7:30 pm
Don’t judge a book by its cover! Choose from a selection of wrapped books with short descriptions that hint at what’s inside. Then unwrap it and give it a chance! After you choose your book, curl up and start reading while enjoying some sweet treats. *This program is intended for ages 12-18. Registration is required.
Primitive and Improvised Cooking Methods Class at Roan Mountain State Park
Saturday – February 22nd, 2020 at 1 pm
Join Ranger Holland for an educational and interactive program on various methods of preparing and cooking meals in the wild using improvised and primitive methods. Instruction will include using rocks for frying and steaming food, boiling in improvised containers, making bush bread, ash cakes, and bannock bread, planking meat with boards and other primitive cooking methods. Seasonal menu items may also include Squirrel on a Rock and Venison on a Stick depending upon availability.
Cost $11 per person.
Registration is required and program space is limited. This is a bushcraft program and will be held outdoors. Participants should dress according to weather conditions. Meet at Park Headquarters prior to going to the program area.
Audition for Liberty! The Saga of Sycamore Shoals
Sunday – February 23rd, 2020 at 2 pm
Passionate about our heritage? Interested in performing in Tennessee’s official outdoor drama? Audition for this fun and unique interpretation of the American Revolution as told by the Overmountain Men: colonists who defied British law and settled on Cherokee lands. This performance takes place at Sycamore Shoals, the last three weekends of July.
Natural Health and Living Class at Sweetsie Treats
Wednesday – February 26th, 2020 from 1 pm to 2 pm
Hosted by Carter County Drug Prevention Coalition and Sweetsie Treatz. Learn all about the natural way of life and healthy living habits.
Adopt-A-Tree at Warrior’s Path State Park
Saturday – February 29th, 2020 from 10 am to noon
Warriors Path State Park, 490 Hemlock Rd, Kingsport, Saturday, February 29th will be our annual Adopt-A-Tree event. We will be planting hundreds of new trees in the park. For each tree seedling you plant in the park, you can take one home to plant. We’ll start at 10 am and work until noon or until we run out of trees. Follow signs to the planting location.
Send Valentine’s Day Cards to Vets! This is a great opportunity to honor our local vets and let them know we are thinking of them and they are loved. Details can eb found here.
