Teen Book Club at Johnson City Public Library

Tuesday – March 6th, 2018 from 6 pm to 7 pm

Join The Johnson City Public Library for The Teen Book Club. This month’s selection is “The Serpent King” by Jeff Zentner, a story of finding your identity among the difficulties of your past, named to ten different Best Book of the Year lists and a William C. Morris award winner. Register for book club at the library, via phone, or through the e-calendar at www.jcpl.org.

STEAM Saturdays at The Washington County Library in Gray

Saturday – March 10th, 2018 from 10 am to 11 am

Join Miss Jaden at the Gray Library for STEAM Saturdays! This program is an opportunity for children to explore the fundamental subjects of science, technology, engineering, art, and math through fun and exciting projects and experiments!  There’s a different activity or craft each time we meet to help us learn more about these subjects and how they shape our world! This program is open to children in grades 2nd-5th. It meets once a month.

Watermedia Painting – Sycamore Shoals

Saturday – March 10th, 2018 from 9 am to 12 pm

Watermedia Painting will be taught by Barbara Jernigan. You will learn to paint with watercolors and acrylics on paper – the possibilities are endless! Landscapes, spring flowers, mountain vista’s, or maybe even a selfie could be the subject of your creation. Photo references or tracings will be provided as you paint your own composition along with the instructor. If you have your own supplies, the cost is $12.00; if the instructor provides supplies the cost is $20.00.

Let’s Explore Africa Quiz Competition – Tennessee State Championship at ETSU

Tuesday – March 13th, 2018 from 11 am to 2 pm

Students in 4th through 12th grades are hereby invited to participate in the Let’s Explore Africa (LEA) – Tennessee State Quiz Competition. LEA is a fun trivia game established to help contestants learn about Africa as they navigate the continent from Cape Town to Casablanca. Participants will answer multiple choice questions at various grade and difficulty levels. Questions will cover geography, entertainment, people, literature, symbols, etc.

An audience is welcome but must also register for a ticket. Competing grade levels and schedules are as follows:

Level 1 = (4th – 7th graders) 1st Hour

Level 2 = (8th -12th graders) 2nd Hour

St. Paddy’s Weekend in Jonesborough

Friday and Saturday – March 16th and 17th, 2018

Events and activities for all ages including:

– #JBOgold Scavenger Hunt (with new clues and locations!)
– Find Paddy the Leprechaun — Win prizes if you find him!
– Arts Activities with the McKinney Center
– Merchant deals throughout downtown

Civil War Encampment at Tipton-Haynes

Saturday – March 17th, 2018 from 9 am to 3 pm

Come and enjoy a day with Civil War reenactors of the Department of East Tennessee as they drill for the new year. Experience camp life and learn how the infantry and artillery would have prepared for battle. Also, enjoy a tour through the historic house and explore the cave and woods. Regular admission price is required while members are free.

Easter Eggstravaganza at The Mall At Johnson City

Saturday – March 17th, 2018 from 9:30 am to 11:30 am

What makes the spring season even sweeter? Making memories the whole family will cherish. Join us for an Easter KidX Eggstravaganza, our Easter Egg Hunt for ages 0-12. Kids will be divided into four age groups:

  • 0-2
  • 3-4
  • 5-6
  • 7-12

Each age category will have the chance to find the golden egg filled with a FREE Easter Bunny Photo package and Easter basket. (Meet on the lower level in front of Hollister)

Mini-Fruit Pie Workshop at Elizabethton Public Library

Tuesday – March 20th, 2018 from 5 to 6 pm

Are you a teen or tween, age 11-18? Do you love baking? Do you love pies? If so, this event is for you! Registration is required as space is limited.

ETSU Arboretum Arbor Day Celebration & Tree Give-Away

Friday – March 23rd, 2018 from 11 am to 2 pm

ETSU Arboretum and Department of Sustainability will give away 1800 tree seedlings in celebration of Arbor Day. Species include; Willow Oak, Red Hickory, Persimmon. Additional species, to be determined, will be provided by Bartlett Tree Experts. Up to three trees per household can be picked up from either of two locations; Lot 22 (opposite the soccer stadium and behind Earth Fare) or Borchuck Plaza (in front of Sherrod Library). Lot 22 will be available for parking without a permit on the day of the event.

*We did this last year and we got some beautiful trees! I will recommend getting there towards the beginning. By about noon they were down to just two options. T had done a bunch of research and wasn’t able to get his choices. That said, we were still very grateful for the trees and they were lovingly planted and are currently thriving now! *

Spring Hike at Sycamore Shoals

Saturday – March 24th, 2018 at 10 am

Step out into the fresh spring air at Sycamore Shoals and be immersed in blooms and buds. On similar hikes, visitors have seen numerous native wildflowers, and critters ranging from Otters to Eagles. Meet Ranger Corbin Hayslett in the Visitor Center to begin our leisurely stroll along the graveled Patriot’s Path trail. Please bring hydration, wear appropriate footwear, and dress accordingly for the weather.

Spring Wildflower Walk at Warrior’s Path State Park

Saturday – March 24th, 2018 from 9 am to 12 pm

Spring Wildflowers – they’re called “spring ephemerals” because they only last a short time. Come see them while they last! This morning we’ll hike in one of the park’s richest wildflower habitats, and discover more about the life histories of these gems of the forest. Be sure to come dressed for the weather – early spring can be cool and damp in the hills of East Tennessee! Wear good walking shoes and bring along a snack and some water. And don’t forget your camera. Meet at the park’s mountain bike trail parking area, at the end of Freeman Road.

Homeschool at the Library: Washington County Library in Gray

Monday – March 26th, 2018 from 11 am to 12 pm

Are you a homeschool family looking for an interesting activity? Join us at the Gray Library for our monthly Homeschool Day program! Homeschool Day will take place once a month and will include a variety of interesting topics including tech workshops, art appreciation, STEM activities and more! This is the perfect opportunity to socialize with other homeschool families and have a good time!

Dino Egg Hunt at Hand’s On Museum

Friday – March 30th, 2018 from 9:30 am to 12:30 pm

Head downtown and over to Hands On! for some EGG-cellent prehistoric family fun!  Stop by the Dino Egg Hunt anytime between 9:30 and 12:30 for experiments, crafts, games, a prehistoric putting course, and more!  Don’t forget to stop by the prehistoric forest to hunt for Mama T-Rex’s dinosaur eggs and return them to her in exchange for a goody bag.  Stay tuned to our website and social media for more details!

Bunny Hop 5K and Kids’ Dash at Founder’s Park

Saturday – March 31st, 2018 from 8:30 am to 10 am

It’s that time again! The Blue Plum Organization is bringing back the 2nd Annual Bunny Hop 5K and Kids’ Dash. This certified 5K course starts promptly at 8:30 am and official time will be kept by We Run Events. The Kids’ Dash will begin at 9:30 and a joint awards ceremony will be immediately after. After you HOP across the finish line, stay for the community Easter Egg Hunt sponsored by Munsey Church in Founders Park beginning at 10:30!

Ph7 Dermatology and Drs. Ellis and Mefford Dental Associates will be conducting health and wellness activities for the entire family. Underground Fitness will lead warm-up activities prior in the amphitheater at 8 am. Wild Wing Café and Fleet Feet are also on-board!
Winning Tortoise Productions will be preserving the memories of the day!

Pre-registration ends on March 29, but participants can register to participate on the day of the event during packet pick-up from 7:30 – 8 am.
The entry fee for the 5K is $20 per person in advance and $25 on the day of the race. Kids 12 and under can participate in all events at no cost, and the first 50 kids at the race will receive bunny ears. Participants who are 13 years and older and pre-register will receive a T-shirt.
