Quote of the Week From John Adams

Quote of the Week From John Adams

Every week we choose a quote to focus on. This week we chose a John Adams quote.

“There are two types of education… One should teach us how to make a living, and the other how to live.”

– John Adams

This John Adams quote has us focused on all parts of education. As we teach T we always try to keep in mind that education includes more than the standard subjects. Aristotle once said, ” Educating the mind without educating the heart is no education at all.” We agree and that is why we dedicate so much time to character development and service to our community. We do a lot of Random Acts of Kindness as well.

There is more, though. This John Adams quote is the reason we teach a subject called Life Lessons as well. We want to be sure that T is fully prepared when he becomes a man to lead a productive life, to care for his home, his body, his family, his car, and even to pay his taxes. We have already taught him how to cook, allowed him to assemble book shelves and end tables. He has been taught to paint interior walls and do general upkeep in our home. He has basic chores which include making his bed, keeping his room clean, taking care of the family cat, and taking the garbage out. Over the next school year we will teach him the following:

  • How to change a tire.
  • How to change the oil in a car.
  • How to prepare the house for colder weather. Covering windows and reinsulating around the doors.
  • How to do his own laundry.
  • How to keep a grocery budget and do meal planning.
  • How to stay active in the community through outreach and volunteer opportunities.

These are just the few we have on our schedule but we are opportunists in this area. For example, a few weeks ago one of our toilets wasn’t flushing correctly. T had an opportunity to replace the part with supervision from his Dad.

If you love this quote from John Adams, there are several other John Adam’s quotes worth learning. Like this one,

“You will ever remember that all the end of study is to make you a good man and a useful citizen.”

– John Adams
