T and I hiked The Spillway Trail in Bristol and the fall colors were awesome! This trail is easy and a great option for everyone needing some sunshine and nature. It’s really more of a walk than a hike. We found this trail through our AllTrails App. That’s how we find a lot of our hiking destinations.

T and I parked up at the lake and were treated to this view of South Holston Lake. It was beautiful!
The trail itself is actually a graveled road that leads to the spillway. It’s lined by trees for most of the walk and it inclines (gain of 449 feet) but happens so gently you hardly notice the climb.
The trail is tree-lined on both sides of the trail. Occasional peeks of the lake are visible.
Until it finally opens up right here!
To the spillway itself.
The reservoir is on the South Fork Holston River. The purpose of the spillway is to protect the main earthen dam in case the lake level rises quickly.
This is the scene that meets you at the end of The Spillway Trail. I love this little tree and the lake views behind it and I couldn’t help but imagine how I wished I had a blanket and a picnic.
