Birthday Hike On Roan Mountain
A Symbolic Tradition To Share With Your Kids
We have a standing tradition to take part in a birthday hike every year. I like to see T welcome in a new age while standing on top of a mountain. It’s symbolic in so many ways.
He can stand up there on top of the world surrounded by all that beauty that is our true home, having arrived after putting in great effort, determination, and some sweat, (there are no short cuts to a mountain top) and take a moment to be surrounded by the most perfect silence where you can actually think. Really think clearly for yourself.
No cellphones or screens, no voices distracting or setting their own agendas, no cries for attention except the voice within which rarely gets heard in the regular everyday setting we exist inside.
No, just the peaceful perfect silence that allows only for bees buzzing, soft winds stirring, grasses dancing, and nothing more.
Here we can think about what we want from the year ahead and set a goal and then take some time to count our blessings which are impossible to ignore in such a place as one untouched by human innovation. God’s perfect work highlighted in every tiny detail.
And while we breathe in the fresh air and let the wind toss our hair and the sun kiss our face, we can reflect on all we experienced without judgment. We can consider all we have won and lost, all we have discovered or rediscovered, all we have loved and learned in the year behind us and truly receive it.
Just as it was and with gratitude.
If all of us could look at least once a year, really look around, and see how far we have climbed and how far ahead opportunity lies in every direction, I believe we would live better lives. And that belief is why we insist on making the climb, and why the tradition of the birthday hike continues.
